OUR APPROACH

Nutritional Science is a relatively new and an ever evolving field. Remember when low-fat diets were the thing? (That was circa 1990’s). With that in mind, we need to look at nutritional science through a broad lens before we apply it to an individual’s way of eating. 

 

We (the RDs with Nourished Lifestyles) don’t believe in anecdotal evidence; when we recommend an approach, we base it on rigorous scientific evidence. We also aren’t fans of misinformation or “it worked for me, so it will work for you” approach. Everyone’s nutritional needs are different and they change with age too! For this, we never take a one-size fits all approach. 

 

Most importantly, the dietitians at Nourished Lifestyles believe that food should be a part of life that is enjoyable not loathed or feared. We believe that developing and staying true to your own food values is a must! 

While dietitians love to talk about food, it isn’t the only component to leading a healthy lifestyle. We also cover other important life factors that impact our food choices:

  • Dealing with the stressors of life instead of ignoring them; 

  • integrating activity throughout your day; 

  • developing patterns and environments to ensure you get the rest (e.g. sleep) you need to recharge your body; 

  • and supporting positive relationships with others that bring positivity and love into your life. ​

DIETITIAN VS. NUTRITIONIST

WHAT IS A DIETITIAN

AND HOW IS THAT DIFFERENT FROM A NUTRITIONIST?

Dietitians are healthcare providers with expertise in food and nutrition who completed multiple layers of education and training established by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)

  • Registered Dietitians (RDs) have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, but most, like our team, also hold graduate degrees

  • Completed 900-hour extensive supervised dietetic internship

  • Passed national credentialing exam

  • Maintain 15 hours of continuing education per year

  • In Maine, RDs need to be licensed by the state in order to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT)

  • In Maine, only licensed Dietitians can accept insurance for nutrition counseling.

AS A TEAM OF DIETITIANS

We provide science-based nutrition care in a fun, applicable way. Proper nutrition and a healthy relationship with food is critical for feeling your best. We strive to help clients replace food anxiety with confidence in making the healthy choice the easy choice.


Through evidence-based nutrition practice and goal-oriented sessions, our dietitians will help you identify the most realistic action to help you reach your goals. Each plan is tailored to meet the individual needs of the client. Plans are flexible as we have found rigid plans don’t accommodate for the changes of life. 

We work to create a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach by communicating regularly with other practitioners on your medical team.

MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY

MNT is a nutritional approach to managing medical conditions. It is not about dieting, but about managing your needs through a healthy approach to lifestyle and eating.
